New signing!

Attacking midfielder Jeremy Menez, 21, is due to sign for Roma today from Monaco. No, I don't know anything about him either. Apparently he's a playmaker, pacey, strong accelaration, a good dribbler, scores a few goals, likes to play off the main striker, and was the youngest ever player to score a hat-trick in Ligue 1, aged 16. He's represented France at every youth level and made his full national debut this year.

There's a lot of "future superstar" and "the new Zidane" being bandied about, but we'll see about that. And allegedly Man Utd were interested. L'Equipe claims Portsmouth tried to buy him too. Whatever.

Anyone could be made to look good on a well-assembled YouTube clip but y'know he still, er, looks good on it....

It should be confirmed later, though Wikipedia already lists him as "Effectif professionnel actuel" at "AS Rome" so who knows...

Anyway I am pretty optimistic about this though I don't know for sure whether a 21-yr-old is the ideal replacement for a departed first team player. But I prefer this option to Baptista at least. Can we get a tentative woot?

In other news Chelsea look to be about to ease their desperate midfield shortage (only Lampard, Deco, Essien, Mikel, Ballack, Cole, Wright-Phillips and Malouda) by buying the entirely necessary and wholly useful Robinho for an eminently reasonable sum of money. CB is delighted.

Roma probably need a few midfield options with the departure of Mancini (boo! hiss!). I don't know if this boy is the answer but you never know...

Roma just drew Chelsea. Could get ugly in your house.

These stranieri come to Rome and do stuff-all! Who was the last one to come who actually did anything of note, who was not already previously established in Italy with another club?? Fabio Junior? Mido? Carew?
Hopefully this one will be different, if Spaletti doesn't make the splinters stick in to his ass by leaving him on the bench.

AR: that seems a bit harsh on Juan and Mexes, just to pick two current names at random.

Spain had 5 players aged 20-22 on their Euro '08 team. 21 is plenty old enough. He'd be a grisled vet on Arsenal. Good signing!

the kid is a good prospect. i wouldnt get too carried away with the new zidane stuff, i feel for that with gourcuff. But i think menez will do well for you. Positionally he is pretty versatile too so should help with the crazy formation you guys play.
