conference time

If you are in Florence on Saturday, and fancy coming to a one-day workshop on Language, Culture and Political Violence, then I should be delighted to meet you there. You can find details on the website of the European University Institute, or take a look at the complete workshop programme.

I am giving a paper entitled "Those who die in the service of the nation are immortal": commemoration, demobilization and violence in Italy after the First World War."

With a bit of luck, I may even have written the damn thing by then.

Be sure to include the line: "It ain't nothing but a heart-breaker, friend only to the undertaker" somewhere in your paper

I'll be interested to hear your report on the Irish immigrants thing. And as for writing a paper - pah. Why break the habit of a lifetime?

You may want to check with the Osservatorio before buying your railway ticket . . .

[insert smiley thing]

Best of luck with the paper and the conference; I'd love to read it afterwards.

And if you can get someone to take you to lunch or dinner, try I Polpi in Fiesole; it's ace.

hehe yep, maurading violent knife-happy historians across the land will be hoping to converge on Florence and rough up some art buffs. carrying banners saying "Blocco Bloch" and "Braudel Fighting Clan", perhaps.

they're not going to let us go to sicily, the buggers. not that I cold really afford it anyway. Alemanno is talking about putting up big screens somewhere (San Giovanni, maybe?) but I can't see it - Sky have got their knickers in a twist. And it'd not please his Laziale votership (sorry, irresistable)
