worthy cause of the day

One of the charitable initiatives with which AS Roma has been invovled recently is the case of Edoardo, born in February 2004 and diagnosed before the age of 2 with an extremely rare form of genetic leukemia-type disease called metachromatic leukodystrophy. The condition leads to gradual muscle wasting and progressive loss of vision leading to blindness, mental and developmental problems, eating problems and eventually coma and death, usually by age 5 or so. It is currently considered incurable and even palliative measures are scarce. One clinic in the US has acheived some success in providing treatments, and Edoardo's family are trying to raise money to take him over there. The club has been supporting their campaign, and Edo and his parents met Francesco Totti pitchside before the Udinese game in March; the Mayor of Rome, Walter Veltroni, has also taken up the case and organised a meeting with Livia Turco, the health minister. Various ultras' groups & fans' sites are also supporting the initiative, if you fancy a look (Italian only I'm afraid) the website is here:
